About
Laurjosh....
Laurjosh Dachshunds was started in 1992 with the purchase of Tallavast
Anastacia Elgin, a miniature smooth dachshund. Since that time we have
been selectively breeding miniatures to achieve a type that mirrors the
standard-sized dachshund. Our kennel name is derived from combining the
names of our first two children, Lauren and Joshua. As Murphy's Law
would have it, number three (Micaela) came along and she is actually the
dog lover in the family. Didn't use much foresight with that plan
eh?
We are located in Shavertown,
Pennsylvania (18708), approx 2 hours north of Philadelphia and 2.5 hours west
of New York City. We are committed to producing quality dachshunds with
breed type, soundness (healthy, great temperaments) and balance--dogs
that adhere to the
breed standard
and dogs that are fun to live with.
Brenda is the
official "whelper" and is often available when I am not to bring puppies
into the world. (psst....it's really the only part she
likes--she's a cat person). Brenda is a Registered Nurse and the
best wife and mother a man could ask for. I (Kevin) am a Physician
Assistant employed in Neurosurgery/Critical Care. Brenda and I were
married in 1988.
We are members of the
Dachshund Club of America and
the
National Miniature Dachshund
Club.
Policies...
As is typical with most show breeders, all puppies leaving Laurjosh as
pets must be spayed/neutered and are provided with "Limited
Registration". Show prospects may or may not be sold on
co-ownership depending on where that particular dog fits into our
breeding program. Males sold to proven show homes, are often only
co-owned for their show career. Bitches may be co-owned until a
puppy back is received.
Focus...
Our focus has always been the Miniature Smooth Dachshund
and will continue to be. However, as of late we have
also been working on Miniature Longs and Miniature Wires. In 2009 we
also purchased another standard longhair dachshunds. I love
variety and this wonderful breed offers a great deal!

Other
Interests..
I do have interests outside of dachshunds. Actually,
anything I become involved in usually turns into an
obsession. I love landscaping around my home and in
the last two years have begun hybridizing daylilies. It
requires similar planning and strategizing as breeding dogs.
Sounds strange, but there are literally thousands of
different daylily cultivars already registered. It takes
many years to produce a plant with a flower that is unique,
a proven producer of offspring, and with desirable
characteristics (plant habit, number of scapes, height of
flower above the foliage, etc.). Hopefully, I will
start approx. 1000 new plants this year. From there it will
take 2 years for the first flowers and another 3 or 4 years
in the garden to determine it's qualities (or lack of).
I do more with
the dogs in the fall and winter, and concentrate on gardening in the
spring and summer. By the change of seasons, I'm usually ready for
a change of focus! |
